Mass. English Plus Coalition welcomes all the help we can from volunteers with various experiences and interests. If you want to volunteer, please submit a letter describing your area(s) of interest, work/education experiences, and the specific activity you are interested in, our volunteer coordinator will contact you to arrange for an interview. Training will be offered to all volunteers.
At the moment we have the following volunteer opportunities:
Organizers are needed to help mobilize community responses to the bills being filed at the State House. Duties may include: collecting petitions, phone calling, data-base management, organizing community information meetings, legislative advocacy training, staffing a table at an event, organizing testimony for the hearings, etc.
Those with media experience are needed to do trainer of trainers sessions in media advocacy.
Volunteers (with or without media experience), are needed to help implement media strategy plans. Activities may include arranging media interviews, faxing and/or preparing press releases, organizing press conferences, and working on message development subcommittees, etc. Volunteers can work in their area of interest.
Volunteers are needed to help organize multicultural/immigrant festivals. You may serve on one of the subcommittees- program, outreach, fundraising, etc.- and/or volunteer on the day of the festival. Multicultural performers are also needed.
Immigrant Rights Conference Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help organize an immigrant rights conference scheduled for this summer. You may serve on one of the subcommittees- program, outreach, logistics - and/or volunteer on the day of the conference. The location of the conference will be in the Boston area.
ISAA Citizenship Subcommittee Member
Volunteers are needed to help plan and implement a series of community dialogues on citizenship. Volunteers are needed to arrange for refreshments (donated in possible), to facilitate, to do outreach, and to serve on the planning committee.
Legislative Committee Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to help plan and organize public education strategies in response to legislative proposals. This may include getting testimony for the hearings, collecting petitions, working with the community organizers to arrange for rallies at certain visibility events, and serving on the planning committee. Current priority issue areas are legislation relative to interpreter services and bilingual education.
Language Rights ESL Curriculum Committee
Adult educator are needed to help revised our Language Rights Curriculum for ESL/ABE learners. This curriculum was created in 1991 as a way to foster critical thinking on the issues of English Only in an adult education classroom.
Speakers are needed to do community-based speaking engagements as part of our public education campaign. Volunteers will be trained. Topics may include: Bilingual Education; Language Rights in the Workplace; Understanding your Interpreter Services Rights, etc.
